J. CLARK SALYER NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGEE

The largest national wildlife refuge in North Dakota, J. Clark Salyer NWR offers 58,700 acres of wetlands, prairie and woodlands. Extending south from the Canadian border the J. Clark Salyer National Wildlife Refuge is located along the Souris River. The Refuge serves as an important feeding and resting area for hundreds of thousands of waterfowl which annually migrate through the Central Flyway. More than 300 species of birds have been observed here since the refuge was established. For scenic marsh views, visit the accessible wildlife viewing platform and observation tower near the Refuge headquarters. In the spring, an observation blind for viewing sharp-tailed grouse breeding displays in the sandhills is available by reservation.

This site has been identified as being significant for world bird conservation and officially designated a Globally Important Bird Area.

Birds to See: Gadwalls, Blue-winged Teal, Mallards, Canada Goose, Western Grebes, Eared Grebes, White-faced Ibis, Black Terns, Sprague’s Pipit, Baird’s Sparrow, LeConte’s Sparrow, Upland Sandpiper, Sharp-tailed Grouse, Ring-necked Pheasant, Gray Partridge, Ruffed Grouse, Wild Turkey, Swainson’s Hawks, Franklin’s Gulls, Nelson’s Sharp-tailed Sparrows, Clark’s Grebes, Canvasbacks, American Avocets, Eastern Kingbirds, Western Kingbirds and Bobolinks.
